1970

THE VIRGIN BRAND IS BORN

Richard starts selling Virgin Mail Order selling cut price records by post.

1971

THE FIRST VIRGIN RECORDS SHOP

The first Virgin Record shop opens on Oxford Street, London. Behind the till, Richard sells the first album record - a Tangerine Dream album.

1972

THE MANOR

Richard opens the recording studio, The Manor, with artists such as Sandy Denny, John Cale, Tangerine Dream, Gong and Faust recording there.

1973

VIRGIN RECORDS AND VIRGIN MUSIC PUBLISHING

Virgin Records and Virgin Music Publishing are launched in the UK with the release of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells.

1977

VIRGIN SIGNS THE SEX PISTOLS

Virgin Records goes where all other major record labels fear to tread - like belting out “God save the Queen” on Silver Jubilee day, opposite the Houses of Parliament.
