Virgin Voyages takes Toronto

What an exciting time to be in Toronto, as the Raptors battled it out with the Warriors in the NBA Finals. I was thrilled to be courtside in my We The North shirt cheering on Kawhi Leonard and co in one of the most exciting games I’ve ever seen in any sport. Sadly, the Raptors lost out in the end but they have two more chances to get the job done.

It was wonderful walking through the Toronto streets before and after the game and soaking up the atmosphere; it felt almost like a vacation spirit in the city. Speaking of which, we were in town to announce a whole host of shipteases from Virgin Voyages.

Richard Branson and Captain Wendy Williams

Most excitingly, we introduced Captain Wendy Williams as Master of Scarlet Lady. Wendy will become the first Canadian woman to captain a major cruise ship, and I know all of our Sailors are in very safe hands. Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Squad program is dedicated to bridging the gender gap in leadership roles across the maritime industry, where women represent less than three per cent of the workforce, and it’s great to see Captain Wendy leading the way.

Wendy talked about being attracted to the Virgin brand because she likes to do things differently, with a focus on innovation, fun and above all people. Her father said: “Wendy, the only thing in life that will limit you is your imagination.” Well, Wendy seems like the perfect fit for Virgin Voyages.

Meanwhile, we shared a brand-new line-up of itineraries for our premier 2020 season, with additional Mayan Sol sailings, new Riviera Maya voyages and new four-night Fire and Sunset Soirées voyages to Key West. For those wanting a longer journey, we’ve got new seven-night holiday sailings featuring Puerto Rico too. I’m particularly looking forward to exploring the archaeological treasures on the Riviera Maya sailings, and the beach bonfire soirees in Bimini, inspired by those we enjoy on Necker Island.

We revealed the news during some visits around the Virgin family in Toronto, catching up with the Virgin Radio team and giving away some Virgin Voyages live on air. Now I’m off to Virgin Mobile Canada to catch up with the team there too.

While we were on air with Virgin Radio, I was reminded of how I launched Virgin Mobile Canada by ziplining from the top of Dundas Square and driving monster trucks around the city. Would we be making another splash this time? Well, I’m looking at the CN Tower right now. Watch this space…
