Laughter is the best medicine

Laughter is the best medicine, or so the old saying goes. I have always found there to be some truth in this. This has never been more apt than with our good friends Glenn and Mindy Stearns. Glenn was battling cancer, and taking on the disease with his love by his side and a smile on his face. I'm delighted to say he is now well again. As Mark Twain said: “The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.”

While Glenn was undergoing treatment, he and Mindy sent us a hilarious note about their recent experiences. I asked if they would be happy for me to share their wonderful words to make other people smile. "Share away,” they said. “We're all about spreading hope with a laugh!”

Glenn maintained his legendary humour throughout his illness, and they joked about wishing he could have a strong margarita before beginning his treatment. “They have given him a strong sedative to help with that...not tequila.”

“Not much can get him down. I think the biggest challenge will be giving up chicken wings and getting REST. The doctor says he will need that the most. Up until this point rest has not been a recurring word in Glenn's vocabulary.”

“Right now he's gambling his odds of success with a backgammon app on his iPad. He has been doing this since we met with the game of the moment Texas Hold 'em, Blackjack, Angry Birds, Temple Run and now Backgammon. "If I win this game, we’re going to get married, if I win this game we're going to get that house, if I win this game we'll get through this financial crisis, if I win this game I'm going to get  through this cancer." Good news: he wins every time.”

“Thank you for all of your love and prayers. We have been so touched by the outcry of support. Glenn just wants to get this out of the way so he can get back to living. He is still Glenn, he loves attention but not pity, and he doesn't want anyone feeling sorry for him. He's open about his battle and already telling stories about the ordeal so far. Please feel free to text, call, email, but please don't feel the need to walk on egg shells. The more normal the dialogue and exchange, the better.”

A few months later, Glenn was given the all clear. The smiles seem to have worked. Anyway I hope Glenn and Mindy’s story has made you smile. Sometimes all you have in this world is a smile and a friend. Sometimes, that’s enough to get you through. As August Wilson said: “All you need in the world is love and laughter. That's all anybody needs. To have love in one hand and laughter in the other.”
