The day before Regina Brett turned 45, suffering from breast cancer, she wrote a column titled: 45 Lessons Life Taught Me. Since then, her discoveries have been e-mailed around the world, to such a great extent that they recently found their way into my inbox – thanks to my wise Uncle Charlie. Incredibly moved by Regina’s life lessons, I wanted to share those that resonate with me the most.

Life isn’t always smooth sailing – often we come across people who do wrong by us or try to bring us down. Any entrepreneur, including yours truly, can tell you a tale of betrayal or sabotage, which has left them feeling scorned.
But the reality is, nobody is perfect and we all make mistakes. As Regina writes “Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.” No matter the situation, forgiveness is the best answer.
My life and career could have been very different if I hadn’t chosen to forgive one of my very first business partners. Forgiving him was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I retained a great friend, became happier at work and in life, and gained the confidence to grow Virgin. Forgiveness brought us both peace and success.
Don’t go wasting what little time you have on Earth hating someone – it’ll consume you, and you’ll not only end up hating them, but probably hating yourself and your life too.
Like Regina also writes, we should “Forgive everyone everything.” If you’ve fallen out with someone, call them up and arrange to meet and talk about the situation. You’ll most likely both think that the other person is to blame, but give each other the benefit of the doubt.
Nobody gets everything right first time, and it is how we learn from our mistakes that defines us. Everyone deserves freedom to move forward – and forgiveness is the fastest route to peace and happiness.
There’s so much that we can take away from Regina’s life lessons. Which one resonates with you the most? I’d like to hear about it in the comments below.
