As the age-old adage goes, “It’s better to give than it is to receive.” There’s nothing quite like the gift of giving. When you see first-hand the impact it can have, it becomes the best feeling in the world. We know this all too well at Virgin. We never started out just to make money – our business model has always been centred on offering products and services that make a positive difference to people’s lives.
And over the last decade we’ve taken this a step further. I now spend most of my time working for our entrepreneurial foundation. At Virgin Unite we look at the world’s most pressing challenges, and apply our resources and expertise to give help, hope and empowerment.
There are so many challenges facing the world today and we believe that by bringing the right people together and taking an entrepreneurial approach, we can create positive change. Business can be a wonderful force for good.
Traditional Chinese text The Tao Te Ching’s teaching says: “The heart that gives, gathers.” That is, the more we are generous to others, the more we will enjoy life ourselves.
It is certainly something I try to live by, and the reason why my wife, Joan, and I signed up to The Giving Pledge – a philanthropic initiative set up by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

Generosity shows itself in all sorts of ways: giving time, offering kind words, sharing good advice, lending a helping hand. We all stand to gain so much more from giving than from taking – particularly in business.
What does giving mean to you?
