Since we unveiled the new SpaceShipTwo last week, I have been thinking about what it means, and what comes next for Virgin Galactic. While I waited behind the curtain, savouring the time looking at the beautiful VSS Unity before we showed it off to the world, I scribbled down a few inspiring words from other members of the team (always have your notebook handy!)
“A business plan is only as good as the paper you write it on if you don’t have the people to put it into place.” The people we have brought together at Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company are an inspiration to me every day. As you can see in this video, they are living and breathing our mission, making sacrifices and making tremendous progress. I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it.
“To go from a dream and a box of stationary to assembling a unique spaceship.” It is easy to forget how far we have come to get to this point, and how far we can travel together. As Professor Stephen Hawking said: “We are all time travellers travelling into the future together.”
“We think of the vehicles as almost our children, which makes us a family, and we are all so proud to see what they grow into.” It really was a family affair, with four generations of my family present for the launch, and Eva-Deia christening VSS Unity with milk on her first birthday. Just in case you thought the roll out went off completely seamlessly, I couldn’t resist sharing this photo of yours truly getting completely soaked with milk earlier on!
The word ‘family’ gets used too often by companies where working in that company is anything but a family. I hope more companies really do run like families. When things are going well, everyone has an even better time celebrating with each other. When things are tough you can rally around and help each other get through it. If somebody is having a tough time, everyone is supportive. That’s the way we work at Virgin Galactic, and the way we will continue to work.
