I was recently in San Francisco for some business meetings and to check on how our Virgin Hotel is progressing. While we were in town, it was lovely to take some time out to bike around the city.
It was really wonderful cycling down the coastal path down towards the Golden Gate Bridge. I was surprised how everyone was out in groups cycling, jogging together or doing yoga on the grass. The sun didn’t make an appearance but people didn’t seem to be put off by the chilly breeze in the air and it was really refreshing to see so many people using their Saturday to exercise.
It can be very hard when you’re working full time to find time for fitness but it’s really important for your mental health and wellbeing. I’ve struggled as I’ve not been able to exercise due to a shoulder injury but thankfully I have recovered now and it was such a nice change to get out in the fresh air.
I’ve been to San Francisco many, many times over the years and have always loved the city – it embodies so much of what Virgin stands for. So many start-ups call it their home because it is a forward-thinking city with such a strong entrepreneurial energy. This was very apparent everywhere we went - as we cycled I spotted little yellow electric cars buzzing past the start-up HQs and runners checking their heart rates on their smart watches.
We’ve enjoyed a long love affair with the Bay Area, as the home of our US airline, Virgin America, and it’s a perfect fit for Virgin’s next chapter with Virgin Hotels. Built from the ground up on 250 Fourth Street, South of Market, the innovative property will wonderfully complement its vibrant surroundings. It was great to see how the construction is progressing and I’m really looking forward to it being ready for the end of the year. I’m sure Virgin Hotels will find a very happy home in the city.
See you soon San Francisco!
