The fearless Paralympian mindset is something we can all learn from.
It turns out I’m not the only one who thinks so – new research from Virgin Media shows Paralympians are the most inspirational athletes for children.
I’m proud that Virgin Media is partnering with the British Paralympic Association to help support the ParalympicsGB team at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, and at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
It’s part of their ongoing commitment to help transform the lives of disabled people, and builds on their ‘Work With Me’ initiative with the charity, Scope, to support more disabled people to get in and stay in work.
It was great fun watching the Winter Olympics – it was a Games full of moments that will go down in the history books. I loved seeing Britain secure their highest ever medal tally and it was incredible seeing Czech Ester Ledecka snap up two gold medals in snowboarding and skiing. It has been 90 years since anyone claimed gold in two different sports at the same Winter Games. The Olympics and Paralympics are so important because you feel part of something bigger and it motivates people to try new things and get fitter.
Sport is a great way to keep challenging yourself and pushing your limits – whether it’s an Olympic feat or even a run round the park – I guarantee that with training and perseverance you will achieve more than you ever thought possible. When I first tried skiing, I felt like a waddling duck and I only learned by falling over (a lot). It’s now one of my favourite ways to spend a holiday and I often travel to Verbier to spend time on the slopes. The snow we had at Christmas was some of the best I’ve ever seen and it’s a delight being surrounded by wonderful scenery and family. I also had the pleasure of watching Sam snowboard – he’s really quite talented.
I always used to watch the Olympics and Paralympics at home with Holly and Sam when they were younger and I can’t wait to introduce my grandchildren to the Games. I hope you’ve been as inspired as I have and good luck to the ParalympicsGB team!
