Virgin Megastore are replacing plastic shopping bags with fully biodegradable bio-cassava bags across all of their UAE stores.

Plastic waste continues to enter the ocean, every minute, of every day. According to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, 11 billion plastic bags are used annually in the UAE alone. This plastic pollution chokes sea life, causes ‘dead zones’ and kills coral – and Virgin Megastore are committing to help end it.

The AVANI-designed bio-cassava bags are made from organic resins, cassava starch and vegetable oil – making them 100 per cent natural, biodegradable, compostable and certified non-toxic to humans and animals.

The resources used to make these fully reusable and recyclable bags are taken from the markets of Bali, processed into tiny pellets in a state-of-the-art Indonesian facility, and then transformed into beautiful, bright red, Virgin Megastore bio-cassava bags.

This announcement is just the beginning for Virgin Megastore, with plans already underway to roll out the bags across their Middle East and North Africa- based stores.

Next time you’re shopping in the UAE look out for the bright red, biodegradable bags and do your bit to stamp out single-use plastic.
