Recently there has been a refreshing number of advertising and marketing campaigns targeting the ongoing issue of a lack of confidence in girls and young women. While some of you might think the gender gap is being more then compensated for nowadays, I beg to differ.
I don’t want to go into a fully-fledged rant about pay, discrimination and expectation, but I do want to high five the people behind the latest Always advert. It’s uplifting and refreshing – a great way to start the day!
Inviting a mixed group of young girls to the studio, the production team ask the question, ‘Have you ever been told that because you’re a girl, you should not do something?’ The answers were heartbreaking, including one from a young girl who said, “I can’t really rescue anybody. It’s always the boys who rescue the girls in the stories”.
The ad goes on to share that a massive 72 per cent of girls feel society limits them. When asked to write words and sentences on cardboard boxes, to express what they feel limits them, phrases such as “girls should be perfect” and “weak” were among a long list of others.
This is an issue I find particularly hard to let rest. While I was fortunate enough to be supported and encouraged in my individuality, strength of character and ability when growing up, it is perhaps because of this, that I feel so strongly about doing the same for others.
No business is perfect and at Virgin we are always striving to improve and grow – which is why we are currently doing a lot of work at Virgin Management to really understand how we can support everyone to be the best that they can be, without compromising their true spirit and individuality.
While there is a long way to go in the fight for equal pay and equal opportunities, I truly believe that ad campaigns such as this, are a wonderful way of reminding young girls that they really are unstoppable if they decide to stand up and fight back at what has become the norm.
