For thousands of years, parasitic worms have held back human progress.

Disease caused by the most common of these infections – roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and schistosomiasis – have stymied human health, caused pain, stolen nutrients, and stunted physical and cognitive growth in children, preventing them from reaching their full potential. What if there was a  world without disease caused by worms?

Earlier this year eight winners of The Audacious Project, which invites change-makers to submit their best and boldest ideas for tackling the world’s biggest challenges, were announced at the TED conference in Los Angeles. One of the winners was The END Fund.

Virgin Unite, Audacious Project, The END Fund

Their Audacious vision is to help accelerate the movement already taking place across Africa to ensure that families, communities and economies can thrive in the absence of parasitic worm infections.

The END Fund is looking at the problem of delivering deworming treatment through a systems lens and bringing together all the right partners to make programs most effective. They are empowering local stakeholders — from heads of households to heads of state — with a path toward owning effective, sustainable deworming programs.

With investment from The Audacious Project over the next six years The END Fund will bring deworming treatment to almost 100 million people at risk in strategic countries, reversing the devastating impact worms have on individuals and communities.

At a time when our need for positive global change has never been greater, The Audacious Project continues to encourage the world’s greatest change-agents to dream bigger, to shape the best ideas into viable multi-year plans, and to present those ideas in a compelling way to potential supporters. It has a simple, ultimate goal: to make philanthropy more collaborative and more effective.

The project was brought to life through the collaboration of some of the most respected names in the non-profit world, including Skoll, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Scott Cook & Signe Ostby and more. Virgin Unite is proud to be one of the key partners to have joined forces to help make this possible.
