While room air-conditioning units were once thought of as a luxury appliance, access to comfort cooling is now basic necessity for people around the world - enhancing wellbeing, health, comfort, and productivity.

In the most highly populated places on earth there is simply not enough wealth to afford air conditioners – as a result people are becoming ill and increasingly unproductive. This is a huge public health risk and a global economic issue, as well as a basic issue of fairness and justice.

If we improve AC efficiency by just 30 per cent we will require 25,000 fewer power plants by 2050 – equating to a 2.5 trillion dollar saving.

The Global Cooling Prize is rallying a global coalition of leaders to solve the critical climate threat that comes from growing demand for residential air conditioning. By harnessing the power of innovation The Global Cooling Prize team hope to provide cooling solutions that enhance people’s lives without contributing to runaway climate change.

This ground-breaking competition is designed to incentivise development of a residential cooling solution that will have at least five times less climate impact than today’s standard AC units.

This technology could prevent up to 100 gigatons (GT) of CO2-equivalent emissions by 2050, and put the world on a pathway to mitigate up to 0.5˚C of global warming by 2100, all while enhancing living standards for people in developing countries around the globe.
