Sean Morgan is a Branson Centre entrepreneur – working to provide product solutions for healthcare providers in the Caribbean.

Today, we’re sharing the story behind Sean’s business journey, his lessons learnt with the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship, and the ways he is ‘Making it happen’ with his business, Dental and Medical Supplies (DMS Limited).

Tell us a bit about yourself and your business, Dental and Medical Supplies (DMS Limited).

I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, and am one of three children to an Engineer and a Librarian. I studied Banking and Finance, but never worked in the finance field. I joined a medical company straight out of university and it’s been a whirlwind of an experience since then – interacting with suppliers, customers, government, students and team members – all of whom have helped to shape and change me. DMS formed to provide a solution for healthcare providers who wanted products which were simple, innovative, durable and efficient – without burning a hole through their pockets.

How did you first connect with the Branson Centre and what have you learnt since being there?

The Branson Centre was highly recommended to by another entrepreneur who had completed the program in 2015 – I joined in 2016.

  • The Branson Centre helped me to think BIG – so big that it scared me! The team helped me break down my dream into tiny, realistic, forward-moving steps to accomplish that goal.
  • The Branson Centre trained me to always be ‘pitch ready’ – whether it’s to a customer, or looking for finance. Reminding me to keep my information updated and accessible.

How can your business best benefit and give back to the wider community?

Helping people has always been an activity my family and I have been involved in – through service clubs, church groups or in the community. When I got started in DMS, I began to appreciate even more how having good quality supplies can impact a practitioner’s ability to deliver excellent service to the community. I’ve been fortunate to benefit from good access to health services, but when I started interacting with the public sector I noticed the short-falls of the medical system.

Often they were forced to purchase inferior quality goods and weren’t able to deliver high quality service. What I now know is that healthcare is expensive and not as available as it needs to be. I will continue to help outreach programs by providing the materials, disposables, and sometimes instruments, which allow them to see more patients and make more impact.

What is the most important thing that running a business has taught you?

Be objective and don’t take things personally. Each person values different things and to serve each individual we must drill down to what’s important to 'them' and not only focus on what we think is important.

What does the phrase 'Entrepreneurs make things happen' mean to you? How do you make things happen in your business?

I make things happen through persistence and diligence. Success and breakthroughs take constant hard work before results start to be seen. Diligence for me is being ‘pitch ready’. Know your work and know your brand. Be so committed that you are regarded as the go-to person for opinions on events, equipment and happenings in your industry. Here at DMS, we make things happen through partnerships. We engage partners on both sides – our customers and our suppliers. By listening to our customers, we can address their problems with the best solution for them.
