PROWEB is a women’s empowerment network, enabling women to speak with one voice and harness the talents and skills of entrepreneurial women in Zimbabwe.
Virgin Unite began funding PROWEB in 2014, as part of a three-year program. Since then we’ve supported over 180 women entrepreneurs and matched them to incredible female mentors.
With our continued support – these entrepreneurs have gone onto make differences in their communities and industries – including hospitality, farming and graphic design and much more. Today we’re sharing the story of Farirai Katongera, owner and manager of an events venue and operator of a confectionary supply service in the Northern region of Zimbabwe.
Farirai participated in the PROWEB foundation course last year and had her eyes opened to the growth potential of her business. Before engaging with the women’s training program, her monthly income was $100 and the business had one employee (who also doubled as her domestic worker). Now, just a year on, Farirai receives a monthly income of over $800 and has engaged three more employees dedicated to helping the business grow.
Under the business mentorship component of the program, Farirai was matched to her mentor, Tsitsi Mugweni – a successful female entrepreneur running an international bus terminus in Zimbabwe. In the mentoring sessions they had, Tsitsi motivated Farirai not to take her business for granted, but instead to constantly be on the lookout for opportunities to grow. Tsitsi also connected Farirai to several successful female entrepreneurs operating business lines similar to Farirai’s, and since then the catch-ups and knowledge sharing have flowed.
Farirai is now committed to breaking down her vision and goals – ensuring her venture keeps on the move. The knowledge she has acquired from the training sessions, courses and mentorship program has given her new skills, as well as helped to build her confidence.
Farirai is thankful to PROWEB for bringing out the potential in her and for matching her to a graceful mentor who desires to see women succeeding in business. The business is growing through new networks and she’s grateful for the immense knowledge and guidance that PROWEB has imparted to her.
