The impact of climate change on business is clear. Greenhouse gas emissions are warming the earth, and the temperature rise above two degrees Celsius will have significant impact on people and the planet.

While there is growing recognition that boards and management teams must be well-versed in these risks and opportunities, many still find themselves short on the necessary information and resources to take action.

The B Team and Ceres have joined together to publish Getting Climate Smart: A primer for corporate directors in a changing environment. Getting Climate Smart is a valuable tool to educate the corporate director community on the risks and opportunities that climate change poses to their business.

This guide aims to fill this knowledge gap by putting climate in perspective for directors’ everyday decisions and considerations. It equips directors with the tools and practices to understand if their business is climate resilient and, if not, how they can manage accordingly.

For companies committed to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, climate competency in the boardroom is especially critical. “They’re learning as they go, learning from each other and learning good practices. This is important, but it’s not always easy,” said Mary Robinson, co-chair of The B Team’s Net-Zero by 2050 Working Group, “Companies really have to work at it and give that leadership.”
