Virgin Media Business has been running VOOM for a few years now and has encouraged thousands and thousands of people to embark upon lives as entrepreneurs. I was in London to judge the grand final recently, but VOOM is about all of the businesses that take part all across the UK – not just those who win at the end.
At the grand final in London, I had chance to meet a few of the brilliant entrepreneurs who had won VOOM’s regional finals. While we enjoyed brunch, I learned more about their ideas and their businesses. I was particularly struck by Michael Harkins’ Turtle Pack, which is a fun swimming aid designed for children aged three to six. Michael is a multi-award winning swim instructor who, in his words, wanted “to make learning to swim turtally AWESOME.”
Holly was with me at VOOM, and I was quick to suggest the Packs for my grandchildren too. Teaching people to swim is a real passion of mine, and it’s an incredibly useful skill to learn. How wonderful if Turtle Pack can help make swimming easier and more enjoyable for kids.
I also met Lauren Hampshire from The Milky Tee Company, who make breastfeeding T-shirts that have a hidden zip on each side to allow easy access for breastfeeding or expressing. She explained how the comfortable, uniquely designed T-shirts can make mums’ lives easier. What a simple, smart idea.
The need for more and more brilliant entrepreneurs has never been more urgent, and the opportunities to make it happen have never been greater. What are you waiting for?
