Studying the Virgin way

With businesses in countries all over the world, we are fortunate to have tens of thousands of wonderful team members spread out across the globe. One of the true perks of being Virgin’s founder is popping in to say hello to our people. Hearing their stories brings me joy.

One story that recently got my attention came from a Virgin Trains East Coast team member. I had the pleasure of meeting Kate Horbury at London’s Kings Cross during our Platform X programme launch.

Studying psychology at university, Kate conducted a case study on Virgin Atlantic, where her research discovered that our people feel that Virgin is a thrilling and fulfilling place to work because creativity and intuition are encouraged and cherished.

Her report concluded: “Because of the fact all employees have the same goals, a goal to create a fantastic service, they are able to successfully come together as a team to achieve this goal. The contribution from the staff is what makes Virgin Atlantic world famous.”

Her research resonated with her so much that she decided she wanted to work for Virgin herself. After graduating, she wrote to Virgin Trains East Coast to express an interest in doing work experience.

This led to her to three months working across many different departments, before securing a role within our Innovation team. Now Kate is working on our Platform X programme, collaborating with disruptive start-ups in an effort to revolutionise rail travel.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kate. As you quoted me saying in your study, Virgin isn’t a company that just talks about putting employees first or glibly claims that our people are our greatest asset.

This is a company that simply wouldn’t exist without the energy, the determination, the wit and the wisdom of our people. It’s great to have you on board the Virgin Family.
