Delighted to share that Virgin EMI is celebrating a fifth consecutive year as the UK’s number record label. Who would have thought that the label, which started life more than five decades ago with some tubular bells and a dream, would still be going from strength to strength.
Richard Branson Virgin Records Early Days
Congratulations to CEO Ted Cockle and all the team, who are working incredibly hard to keep ahead of the competition and nurture a new generation of innovative artists. As we head into the Brit Awards in February the label can look back at another stellar year. There are nominations across the musical landscape from Taylor Swift, to Lorde, Beck to The Killers as well as double nominations for great new talent Loyle Carner and global dance floor sensation Jonas Blue.
I asked Ted to share which artists he is most excited about in the coming year and he shared the label’s amazing array of returning and new talent. “We are looking forward to great new music from Florence + The Machine, Blossoms, Chvrches, James Bay and Shawn Mendes, as well as being the home for fresh US hip hop talent like Migos and the UK music frontline with the likes of Krept + Konan, MoStack and Hardy Caprio amongst so much more.” Thanks Ted - I’d better get listening.
While I no longer spend my days tracking down and signing new artists and heading to gigs every night, I love how Virgin’s legacy in music continues to grow. As well as Virgin EMI, we have Virgin Radio re-establishing itself on the UK airwaves and continuing to grow around the world. Plus, our investment in Sofar Sounds is helping to bring a whole host of new talent into people’s homes and hearts.
