My bucket list

I got talking with some guests the other day, and they asked me how I go about setting challenges. I advised them to think about what they want to see, do, and achieve in their lifetime, then think practically about how to do it.

I wholeheartedly urge everyone to create their own bucket list, and get out there and pursue it. Just do your best not to kick the bucket on the way!

Last year, when asked ‘What’s on your bucket list?’ I responded that I was looking forward to joining my son Sam, daughter Holly and nephew Noah on the Virgin Strive Challenge 2016. I’m proud to say we completed the gruelling journey. It was the toughest mental and physical test of my life, but it was also wonderfully rewarding.

Having ticked Strive off the list (until next time!), I was left to evaluate what’s next. Life for me has been about pushing the boundaries, challenging people’s expectations, and learning and growing from experience. I will never stop reaching.

Whether it’s travelling more than 2000 kilometres from the Switzerland to the Sicily by human power; or crossing the Pacific in a hot air balloon; or breaking the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic, there’s nothing I love more than a good challenge.

So, what’s next on my bucket list? Obviously, going to space with Virgin Galactic remains a goal I am greatly looking forward to achieving. Back here on earth, I’d love to visit Machu Picchu. I’ve been so fortunate to travel the world, visiting all seven continents, experiencing so many different cultures, meeting so many wonderful people, and taking in so many breath-taking sights. But I’ve never been fortunate enough to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I’m in awe of the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s beauty and history. Perhaps another family challenge is on the cards… Peruvian style!

To say the spirit of adventure has had a positive impact on my life would be an understatement. We should all seek adventure and encourage others to do so too. The spirit of adventure motivates us to set goals, push ourselves, thrive in the face of hardship, and achieve epic feats. I can’t wait for all the adventures – big and small – that are yet to come.

What’s on your bucket list? I’d like to hear about it in the comments below.
