Kicking off a challenging year

I celebrated my 65th birthday by announcing that I would take on 65 challenges throughout the coming year. Responding to #ChallengeRichard, the suggestions have come in thick and fast, and I have been noting down my favourites. Some are humbling, others exciting, while many are totally outlandish. I wish I could attempt them all, but I’d need another 65 years to get through them!

To kick things off I have chosen challenge number one, which was sent in by Nigel McKenna ‏from New York City. Nigel challenged me to sit quietly and do nothing for 65 minutes, but look out the window like I did as a child in school. Challenge accepted and completed.

While it may not seem like a particularly daring challenge, believe me, getting me to sit still for over an hour is a very rare accomplishment!

This was a challenge I was more than happy to take on. I’m very lucky to have my family and extended family visiting Necker Island at the moment, and I used the time to simply sit and watch them enjoy the sunshine and each others’ company. The 65 minutes of silence and solitude was also a great opportunity for me to reflect on the challenges I have chosen and think up ways I can best tick them off in the year ahead.

I can tell you now; it’s going to be a fun, but challenging 12 months. Make sure you keep checking back here to see how I’m going, and if I’ve chosen to complete your challenge. And keep sending in your challenges to #ChallengeRichard.

In my 65 years I’ve learned how important it is to keep setting myself new challenges and targets. Challenges help us learn so much about ourselves, and enable us to grow and move forward in a positive direction.

When was the last time you challenged yourself? I’d like to hear about it in the comments below.
