When I was growing up, my parents drummed into me the importance of being polite, and especially saying thank you, and it’s stuck with me ever since. I wouldn’t be where I am today without having had a lot of help from a lot of wonderful people. Knowing this to be absolutely true, I try to always give praise where praise it due, and say thank you to those who’ve helped us along the way.
On that note, I wanted to say a huge thank you to all our teams at Virgin who go above and beyond. The thing that really sets Virgin apart is our people. Whether you are cabin crew, working on bookings for Virgin Voyages, managing a Virgin Active health club or serving customers on Virgin Trains – I just want to say a great big thank you for all the difference you make to people’s lives every single day.
One of my favourite events of the year is the Virgin Stars Party. We host a year-long initiative called Virgin Stars, which encourages our people to shout about the amazing work their colleagues have been doing. From those nominated, one Star from each company is invited to London – many flying in from all over the world – for the party of the year (and I've never missed one!)
Being thankful in the workplace is really important. As all good managers know, praising more than you criticise is critical. Letting your teams know they appreciate their work can make all the difference to an employee's confidence, morale and wellbeing. And being thankful in every day life can open up the door to meaningful relationships, which can lead to remarkable collaborations.
A few of our Virgin companies are in start-up mode, working really hard around the clock to achieve the next milestone and get closer to launching. The teams at Virgin Orbit are a great example, having recently completed a successful test, dropping a fully loaded rocket from under the wing of our modified 747. Whenever I visit I’m always astounded by the incredible amount of intelligence, dedication and talent within their factory walls. The team has achieved incredible feats in just a few short years and I want to say a huge thank you to all the team – every single one of you have played a part in reaching these milestones and getting to this point has been a huge collaborative group effort. Our dedicated small satellite launch service is even closer to reaching space and I couldn’t be more excited.
I love hearing stories of the wonderful things people are doing across the Virgin family – with more than 60,000 people around the world there is never a shortage. Please share any you have in the comments or on social media with the #VirginFamily – I’d love to have a read. Together, we are changing business for good.
