Adventure is in Virgin’s DNA

Across my 66 years, I’ve always loved to go on adventures. Whether it’s finding my own way home from town aged five; flying hot air balloons across the Atlantic and Pacific in my 30s; or spending a month traversing the entire length of Italy under human power to complete the Virgin Strive Challenge just last year – you name it, I’m up for it. They don’t call me Dr Yes for nothing!

As adventure is very much a part of my DNA – literally, as I’m a distant relative of Scott of the Antarctic – I have also instilled it into Virgin’s DNA. At Virgin we encourage our team members to seek adventure and encourage others to do so too. The way we see it, the spirit of adventure motivates us to set goals, push ourselves, thrive in the face of hardship, and achieve epic feats.

With this in mind, I was thrilled to welcome 83 Virgin adventurers to Moskito Island late last year, having just completed the first Caribbean Sailing Adventure, led by Chris Hall. The challenge, which saw many people learn to sail for the first time, was the latest expression of 'have fun, do good' the Virgin way, and marked the 46th world-wide adventure challenge this group of Virgin staff have completed in 10 years.

14 boats set sail from Tortola with six Virgin crew members on each boat. Experienced Skippers introduced mostly novice sailors to the joys of sailing. Across seven days not only did the team have to learn to sail, they also had to learn how to best live together on a boat. Their skills were truly tested, as was their ability to work together. We also threw in some race days, where the crews had to circumnavigate the beautiful British Virgin Islands.

I’m pleased to report that the adventure was a roaring success. Not only did the team members thrive in working together, they all fell love with sailing and adventure, and raised important funds for WE projects in Haiti.

Adventure in the name of a great cause is truly inspirational. There’s nothing better than achieving your goals and helping others in need in the process.

To celebrate the success of our inaugural Virgin charity sail, we hosted a party on Moskito Island. Everyone I spoke to that night is already looking forward to the next adventure.
