Tony Long is CEO of Global Fishing Watch, a newly independent non-profit created out of a collaboration between Oceana, Google and Skytruth. Global Fishing Watch improves sustainability in our ocean resources through increased transparency in commercial fishing activity by publishing information on fishing vessel activity in a free and open platform. Global Fishing Watch accelerates the research and innovation that supports science-based fisheries management and aids enforcement and seafood traceability.
Before joining Global Fishing Watch at the beginning of September, 2017, Tony Long led the Pew Charitable Trusts’ work to end illegal fishing. In this role he brought policy and technology together in order to provide enforcement authorities with the information needed to address illegal fishing. He engaged successfully in several collaborative initiatives including the Ocean 5 funded EU NGO coalition to drive better practices by the European Commission, Project FISH-i Africa that brought eight African countries together to fight IUU fishing in their waters and the enforcement based surveillance platform, Eyes on the Seas.
He entered the world of ocean conservation after 27 years in the British Royal Navy, where he reached the rank of commander. He most recently served on the First Sea Lord’s strategy team, providing executive- and ministerial-level defence planning and policy support to the head of the Navy, his executive board and government ministers. He also acted as the High North (Arctic) lead adviser, responsible for researching and understanding maritime security issues that arise from environmental changes in the Arctic region.
Long has commanded a mine-hunter (HMS Blyth) and a frigate (HMS Monmouth) and spent a great deal of time deployed at sea, including patrols in the North and South Atlantic, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, and the Far East. He has taught at the UK Defence Academy and overseen the strategic alignment of the rules of engagement and use of force guidance for the U.S., NATO and EU commands. Long is a proven leader and team builder. He has a thorough understanding of marine law enforcement, laws of the sea, high seas vessel traffic, port operations, maritime security, and global geopolitics.
