DS Virgin Racing claimed their first win of the Formula E season after Sam Bird's incredible performance at the Buenos Aires ePrix this weekend.
After dominating qualifying and setting the fastest lap in Super Pole to claim pole position for the race, Bird knew he'd given himself the best possible chance for success in the Argentinian capital. In a championship where there are normally so many lead changes during a race, no-one would have predicted that Bird would hold on to first place the entire time.
"I'm just so delighted, I'm so happy for the whole team," Bird said after the race. "This is our first win as DS Virgin Racing, we have worked closely with DS Performance since the start of the season to better understand the car and after all this work I'm ecstatic I won today, not just for myself but for the entire team. This win is for everyone."
Bird headed off Nico Prost on the run down to the first tight corner, then maintained his lead for the remainder of the race. It was a close affair though, and he came under intense pressure after the car changeover, first from Lucas di Grassi, and then from Sebastien Buemi, who pushed him hard right to the very last corner.
DS Virgin Racing's other driver Jean-Eric Vergne had a tough day after a bout of food poisoning meant he missed both free practices and went into qualifying blind. He didn't let this stop him though and crossed the line in 11th place.
As well as performing so well this weekend, both drivers have proven their popularity with fans after they both topped the FanBoost table and received an extra power boost during the race.
