Virgin Galactic reveals the Astronaut Edition Range Rover

Virgin Galactic has teamed up with Land Rover to release a special edition Range Rover exclusively available to Future Astronauts.

The Astronaut Edition Range Rover features distinctive design elements to celebrate Virgin Galactic’s community of Future Astronauts and the once in a lifetime trip they will take.

Land Rover joined Virgin Galactic as its exclusive automotive partner in 2014. Since then, they have provided a fleet of vehicles on the ground at the Virgin Galactic’s development and test facilities in Mojave and at its home, Spaceport America in New Mexico, providing valuable support for the team.

Now, the two companies have collaborated on the design of the Astronaut Edition Range Rover for Future Astronauts. The car is painted a one-off “Zero Gravity” blue inspired by the depth and intensity of the night sky, while the bespoke puddle lamp that illuminates when you open the door features the silhouette of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo. The tailgate and side profile finishers also have exclusive Astronaut Edition badges.

“Land Rover joined Virgin Galactic on its journey to space in 2014 and from the start, the collaboration has been underpinned by iconic design, engineering excellence and desire to push the boundaries of travel for the next generation,” Stephen Attenborough, chief commercial officer at Virgin Galactic, said.

“The Astronaut Edition has been crafted with that in mind, a meaningful and lasting embodiment of a shared vision. We could not be more excited to be able to offer this unique vehicle to our wonderful, global community of pioneering Future Astronaut customers.”

Inside the car, the Astronaut Edition features a crafted piece of the spaceship’s front landing skid that flew on Virgin Spaceship Unity’s first space flight in December 2018. Part of the skid has been repurposed to form two discs within the cup holders. One references a quote Richard Branson often makes to his fellow Future Astronauts – “See you up there” – and the other features the details of the space flight.

These parts will be swapped out once the Future Astronaut has flown to space. They will be replaced with part of the wooden skid from that customer’s own spaceflight and be inscribed with the specific details of their life changing experience.

The Future Astronaut community constellation pattern features in the design details

Virgin Galactic’s DNA of Flight graphic appears on the carbon fibre front console drawer lid and is debossed onto the leather rear armrest. The solid aluminium door handles are engraved with the Future Astronaut community constellation pattern, which represents a global community connected by a love of space. The same design features on the front headrests and metal letter box panel design above the glovebox.
