DS Virgin Racing prepares for Mexico City race

DS Virgin Racing is hoping to continue its strong start to the season this week as the team heads to Mexico City for the next round of the Formula E Championship.

Held at the famous Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit in the Mexican capital, the fifth round of the championship will see drivers battling it out at speeds of up to 210kph on 47 laps of the 17-turn track.

Sam Bird finished third during last season’s Mexico City race is hoping to replicate this and continue his strongest ever start to a season – he’s currently in third place in the drivers’ standings. Meanwhile teammate Alex Lynn will be hoping to recover from last month’s race in Santiago where mechanical issues ended his race early.

“It’s always great to be racing in Mexico as it’s a great circuit with some of the best fans in the world,” Bird said. “Last time we finished on the podium and we’ve shown strong pace all season so hopefully we can perform well this time round.”

Lynn added: “The last race was really frustrating for us but that’s racing and for sure we’ll put that behind us and look to do the best job we can in Mexico. It will be another new track for me, so we’ve been working hard in the simulator to fine tune everything and ensure we’re in the best possible shape.”

This year is the third time Formula E has visited Mexico City and has a special significance as Formula E will donate all profits from the race to the post-earthquake reconstruction efforts in the city. All the cars in the race will also sport the hashtag #FuerzaMexico (which translates roughly as “Strength in Mexico”) in support of the cause.

“Mexico is always a fantastic event, largely due to the amazing fans which last year totalled more than 35,000. I’m sure this year will be just as atmospheric and it’s great that we can help support the post-earthquake reconstruction efforts,” team principal Alex Tai said. “As always we’ll head to Mexico looking to come away with a strong points haul and continue our fight for both the drivers’ and the teams’ championship.”

Round five of the 2018 ABB FIA Formula E Championship takes place in Mexico City on March 3rd. The FanBoost vote is open now, vote for Alex Lynn or Sam Bird on the website or using the hashtags #SamBird #FanBoost or #AlexLynn #FanBoost on Twitter.
