It has been an incredibly tough time for the people of the British Virgin Islands and the Caribbean in the aftermath of the strongest hurricane ever to cross the Atlantic. We are working hard to get the region on the road to recovery, from plans to power the region with sustainable energy to unique fundraisers such as this one…
One of my highlights of the year is always the Necker Cup, our annual charity pro-am tennis tournament, which usually takes place on Necker Island each November. This year, holding the event on Necker is obviously not possible. But we were determined for the show to go on, and to use it as an opportunity to raise funds for the hurricane relief and rebuilding efforts in the BVI and Caribbean.
I’m delighted that the 2017 Manuka Doctor Necker Cup, presented by Metal, will take place in the Bahamas from November 27th to December 2nd. The newly-opened Baha Mar resort has graciously extended their wonderful hospitality to us, and the team from Premier Live and Mehow has been working tirelessly to make all this happen. Thanks to our sponsors, skincare and honey brand Manuka Doctor, and blockchain-based payment platform Metal Pay, for supporting too. The majority of monies raised through the auction and other planned charitable initiatives will be going to the Virgin Unite BVI Community Support Appeal, while Baha Mar has generously donated a live auction item to benefit local Bahamian relief efforts too.
I’m particularly excited to play some tennis with my friend Grigor Dimitrov again. The current world number six has had a stellar year and will be joining us fresh from the ATP Finals in London. We made a great team last year – both with our tennis and our mannequin challenge skills. As I’m a little out of practice, I hope playing against the pros on the clay at Baha Mar will suit my game too. Speaking of which, we’re looking forward to welcoming the likes of Justine Henin, Tommy Haas, Janko Tipsarevic, Brad Gilbert, David Nalbandian and Mark Knowles to the Necker Cup too.
I am also glad my friend Greg Norman is coming back to join us, playing in the Necker Open Golf Pro-Am and also crossing over from course to court and playing as a Pro in the Necker Cup Tennis Pro-Am. It’s going to be great fun watching him set down his clubs and pick up his racquet - you had better bring your A-Game Greg!
In the evenings, after days full of tennis, golf, beach tennis, water sports and relaxing, we’re looking forward to the likes of Jamie Foxx, Redfoo and Jamaican band J-Summa & the Outlaws entertaining us too.
The outpouring of support for the BVI has truly been awe-inspiring. The Necker Cup has raised more than $3 million for good causes in previous years, and I’m hopeful we can make a difference in raising awareness and funds for the rebuilding of the communities in the BVI too. As always, your support is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to welcoming those joining us in Baha Mar soon. Follow all the action on social media using #neckercup and #neckeropen.
