Living the LA dream at Virgin Produced

Sean Horvath might be the new Chief Marketing Officer at Virgin Produced, the Virgin Group’s LA-based media company, but he’s an old hand at navigating life and work in La La Land…

What appealed to you about the CMO role at Virgin Produced?

The legacy and strength of the Virgin brand played a big part in my decision. I was excited to be a part of a team and company that thrives on innovation and disruptive thinking.

Describe the skills you’ve brought to Virgin Produced.

My years of selling and marketing content-based digital programmes gives me a viewpoint that not many other people have. Working at a publisher, a film studio and a social media company have helped me understand how content is viewed through different lenses. There are definitely crossovers between my previous two jobs and my role at Virgin Produced, but I think the most significant one is the production, monetisation and distribution of shortform content across social platforms.

How long have you worked in the media industry?

I’ve been working in this industry for 24 years and continue to be amazed by its transformation. How we consume and distribute marketing messages changes rapidly, and being able to quickly adapt to these changes really excites me.

What’s the Best thing about living and working in LA?

Los Angeles is an amazing city for fitness. How can anyone not love waking up and being able to choose whether you would like to surf, hike, or ski that day?

What were your job dreams when you were growing up?

Throughout high school and college, I always thought I’d be an entertainment lawyer. I moved to LA to do so, but quickly realised that both sides of my brain worked well, and moved into advertising.

Are you learning any new skills at the moment?

Mastering Xbox with my nine-year-old son, Nathaniel!

What’s your ultimate ‘lazy Sunday afternoon’?

Going to the movies with Nathaniel and my husband, Gilles. Recently we’ve seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Wonder, The Greatest Showman and Jumanji.

Are you a ‘thoughtful planner’ or a ‘spontaneous doer’?

I am definitely a thoughtful planner during the week but turn on the ‘spontaneous’ switch once Friday night rolls around…

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done, and why?

Throwing a $1,000 chip on 00 after too many drinks. Luckily, my number came in!

Any smart life advice you’d like to share?

Don’t be afraid to share what’s really on your mind. Just make sure you use a filter before doing so.

What’s currently happening at Virgin Produced, and how will you be involved?

I’ve only been at Virgin Produced for a few months, so everything is still new. The team is currently working with Heal.com to re-imagine their website and digital creative. Heal.com is a smartphone app that makes it easier for busy parents and adults to get world-class primary care in the comfort, convenience and privacy of their own home – in fact, it’s been described by Fortune as ‘a modern-day twist on the doctor’s house call’. It’s a really exciting project, because the brand team has asked us to be deliberately disruptive, and they’re giving us real freedom to do exactly that. The results should be incredible.
