If Everyone Cares

If everyone cares

As part of their competition, which is open until April 17th, Virgin Unite have been asking you to submit your 'Screw Business as Usual' ideas. In thisguest blogJaki Bent explains her idea...

If Everyone Cares is a project that grew from frustration and a dream, from seeds of ideas that had been germinating in my mind for years. It is based on a culmination of every conversation, every experience that I have ever had.

Have you ever needed or known someone that needed help and not known where to go? Have you ever wanted to volunteer and yet not known how to get started? Have you ever wanted to support a charity or project and then been torn by the choice and how to choose which is more important. Some people have said the answer is Google! You just type what you want into a search engine. Well that is ok if you know exactly what you are looking for and the project you need has a web page.

The benefits of a Global Community Map (GCM) are huge and far-reaching.If you need help - you would go to the GCM, select the area that you live in and up would pop a list of projects, charities and non-profits that are in your community.

Volunteering - It surprised me when talking to people about volunteering that so many individuals expressed that they would love to volunteer - but were concerned that if they did and the project was not a match for them, they would then feel bad about backing out! So rather than risk that happening they did nothing!

If Everyone Cares and the GCM will enable potential volunteers to research projects within their community or even globally prior to making contact and a commitment. It will also enable projects to get in touch with each other, generating the ability for them to share resources, tools, strategies and best practice. This, in turn will make them more effective, reduce their costs and allow them to do more of what they do best.

Screw Business as Usual motivated me even more and re-affirmed the need for If Everyone Cares. I have read the book and listened to the audio version - which was even more impactful because of really hearing what was being said, in the tone with which it is intended. If I had to choose a couple of key points that impacted me most, based on my values and the principles of the IEC Project, then it would have to be where Richard says - Change does not happen through any one individual, change happens through the power of communities and never has there been a better time for communities to drive change than now, in our connected global village

And then Richard quotes David Shepherd - Every great movement in the world starts with a tiny group of people who simply refuse to accept a situation, they gather their ideas and their passion and drive forward. If there is a problem, they solve it or simply overcome it. They are not intimidated by the odds.

Screw Business as Usual opened my eyes to some of the amazing things going on in the world by pioneering individuals and companies & I gained a new perspective and respect along the way.
