Los Angeles may be famous for movie stars and sunshine, but the City of Angels is also home to some of the most delicious cupcakes that you'll ever find.
Crafting the perfect cupcake is both an exacting science and a creative art. And while many try, few bakeries achieve that consummate balance of consistency, flavour, and proportions. As I've tried every cupcake I can get my hands on, please allow me to share with you my top three favourite cupcakeries in Los Angeles.
YUMMY CUPCAKES
The first time I visited Yummy Cupcakes their "Happy Day" cupcake transported me to a heavenly realm.
Just thinking about this divine treat with its rainbow-sprinkled vanilla cake and pink buttercream frosting makes me swoon all over again. How joyful, colourful, and delicious this cupcake was! It truly turned a bleak day into a happy one as I smiled the whole ride home.
Yummy Cupcakes specializes in rich and sweet treats that stop just short of being overwhelmingly decadent. With creative flavours like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Buttered Popcorn, Brown Sugar Cinnamon, and some vegan options that even a carnivore would go nuts for, these gourmet cupcakes rank number one in my book!
FROSTED CUPCAKERY
Did I say Yummy ranks number one? Well really we have a tie! Frosted Cupcakery makes the quintessential cupcake with its perfect size, bouncy cake, and tasty, smooth frosting.
Each cupcake comes with a simple but decorative topper, like a gummy candy, chocolate drop, or rim of sprinkles, that adds a touch of texture to an otherwise seamless cupcake.
While most of Frosted's flavors may be traditional, their Bacon Cheddar Corncake with vanilla frosting completely knocked my socks off. As if that weren't enough, I also dove into the pumpkin ice-cream filled vanilla cupcake to seal the deal: Frosted owns my heart.
SUSIE CAKES
I believe the cupcake trend took the nation by storm because they evoke school-day memories of mom baking to celebrate our birthdays. Susie Cakes keeps it simple and sentimental with traditional treats that taste like childhood.
Each made-from-scratch, pastel-frosted cake is adorned with a tasteful amount of sprinkles that give a delightful crunch in a few surprising bites.
What makes Susie Cakes cupcakes unique however, is the hollowed centre that's filled with extra icing, ensuring that every bite is a frosted one. Mmm!
Finally, it should be noted that Susie Cakes makes one of the best Red Velvet offerings in town.
While other famous bakeries like Sprinkles, Magnolia, and Crumbs abound in Los Angeles, Yummy Cupcakes, Frosted Cupcakery, and Susie Cakes rise above the rest with their perfected renditions of America's favourite treat.
