Virgin Trains to continue running West Coast Mainline

Virgin Trains is set to continue running services on the West Coast Mainline for at least another nine months after an announcement by the Department for Transport this morning.

The DfT has said Virgin Trains will remain the West Coast Mainline operator for between nine and 13 months, before another competition is run to find out who will run the line on an interim basis. The details of when a new franchise agreement will be ready is not yet known.

Virgin Trains commented: "Our customers have made clear they want Virgin Trains to continue its excellent service and we now have the chance to deliver that and offer customers some short-term continuity.

"We will now be working hard to make sure we continue to provide the service that has made us successful. Virgin Trains is grateful for the fantastic support from customers and staff over recent months.”

Richard Branson blogged earlier this month that Virgin Trains are “back on track” following technical flaws in the initial West Coast Mainline bidding process. Head over to Virgin Trains to find out more.
