World record fun

Today is the anniversary of the day we broke the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic.

We attempted to break the record 27 years ago and sank. So we were delighted to succeed the second time around in 1986.

In the 72-foot Virgin Atlantic Challenger, we brought the Blue Riband trophy back from America, who had held it for a long time, to the UK.

The publicity surrounding it helped our fledgling airline Virgin Atlantic, which only had two planes at the time, get off the ground.

Tomorrow I’m attempting a new world record with my son Sam (who was born during the Atlantic crossing!), family and friends.

It is wonderful that 26 years later we are able to attempt a world record together.

Watch this space tomorrow for the next challenge…
