Without John Peel, we may not be sitting here today. When he played Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’ in full on the radio, it set in motion the journey Virgin is still on to this day.
I spoke recently to John Peel’s Virtual Record Collection - a great project turning his vast music catalogue into a public archive - about John’s influence on the Virgin empire.
Yet while a lot of people reminisce about what a fine DJ John was, few younger people have ever been lucky enough to hear his wonderful radio shows.
The diversity of the music played often mirrored what we were trying to do at Virgin Records. But as well as the songs, there is also his quick wit, knowledge and sense of humour.
Now 458 (yes, 458!) of John Peel’s original radio shows have surfaced online. For anyone who remembers hearing them, or has always wanted to, now is your chance.
Thanks for the music John!
