Screwing Business as Usual at Rio+20

Some 20 years ago, Gro Bruntland had the wonderful vision to see that the world needed to change the way we do business.

I recently read her “Our Common Future” report from the Rio summit in October 1987 and was saddened that the world had not yet heeded her call when she stated: “We must break away from our sectoral ways of viewing economy and ecology. We must learn to accept the fact that environmental considerations and economic growth are parts of a unified management of our planet. The one is dependent on the other.”

Today, we have the great pleasure at Rio+20 to be celebrating businesses who are heeding her call and truly protecting and valuing our wonderful natural assets. Virgin Unite, together with the Postcode Lottery’s Green Challenge, the Carbon War Room and the UN Foundation we are honouring five business leaders with our Screw Business as Usual awards, from existing businesses on a journey of transformation to exciting new start-ups. Check them out:

Congratulations to all of you, thanks for inspiring us and driving us towards Gro’s wonderful vision.

•    The late Ray Anderson de Interface
