Sylvia A. Earle, who I have the privilege of being an OceanElder alongside, is going to hold a live Google+ Hangout at the Undersea Laboratory, Aquarius, in Florida.
Watch the live conversation on Monday, July 16th at 1pm ET (5pm UTC)and post your questions to National Geographic to get involved in advance.
Sylvia was a force of nature herself at the Rio+20 meetings last month, and is a real inspiration when it comes to protecting the oceans.
She said: “More than ever before, nations are awakening to the opportunities - and responsibilities - involved with their blue borders, especially small island nations.
“Few decision makers have taken into account what we now know about the capacity humankind has for altering the underpinnings of what makes the planet work in our favour. The living ocean (not just rocks, wind and water) is the engine that drives Earth's life support system.
“Ignorance of these realities, focus on short term, power and profit and arrogance may do us in, but hope springs eternal. This truly is the moment in history that will have a magnified impact on the future of the ocean, and therefore of humankind.”
