Chasing Ice

It is hard to imagine what a piece of melting ice the size of lower Manhattan would look like – until you watch the video above.

Adam LeWinter and Director Jeff Orlowski filmed this dramatic breakup at the huge Ilulissat Glacier in Western Greenland. The 3,000 feet glacier retreated one whole mile across a calving face three miles wide.

The video is part of a documentary called Chasing Ice that follows the Extreme Ice Survey’s mission to show the world just how quickly and dramatically many glaciers are retreating. It’s well worth tracking the film down.

As the globe warms, these frozen environments are warming more rapidly. It’s a clear, tangible example of the more complex but equally significant rates of change occurring in many of the Earth’s processes right now.

The time for debating climate change is coming to an end, the time for acting is upon us.
