“Cambio El Chip” - supporting youth entrepreneurialism

While in Chile launching Virgin Mobile Chile, we are also looking to support the thriving young entrepreneurial talent in the country. Today we have a get together with more than 300 young Chileans for an entrepreneurial discussion on how to succeed while also making your business a force for good.

Chile is doing remarkably well, it has got 5% growth and is moving in the right direction. There are extremes in wealth in Chile and the challenge is to lift as many people out from the poverty level as possible. They do have very clever entrepreneurial schemes to encourage people to come and invest in Chile, and it is a great place to start a business.

For entrepreneurs and businesses looking to expand into new areas, the important thing to remember is not to take the market for granted. Understand your consumers and their needs and then make sure you deliver a great product or service that fills that gap.

We are extremely excited to be launching our first Virgin business in Latin America, and while Virgin is unique, we also recognise the need to be sensitive to local culture and local management while embracing the energy and passion of people.

Entrepreneurs also have a huge role to play in innovation and job creation. Our foundation, Virgin Unite, have set up Branson Centres of Entrepreneurship in South Africa and Jamaica. The Centres equips active entrepreneurs with business essentials, access to role models and mentors, and capacity building resources so that they can grow their businesses (and in turn create jobs to transform their communities).

If you have an idea for starting a business, then my advice is to go for it! It is clear from meeting young Chilean entrepreneurs here that there is a real passionate, entrepreneurial streak in the country. There are many people who are building some really exciting businesses and their enthusiasm is contagious.
