Olly Hicks sets out on the Virgin Global Row
- Jan 26, 2009
Olly Hicks has set out on a perilous journey that could see him achieve a feat that no man has achieved before â" to single-handedly row 18,000 miles around the globe in a boat.
Human nature's thirst for adventure, to set and break records, to push boundaries of human endurance to its very limits has meant that by the 21st Century few truly 'world first' records remain to be set. By setting 'world first' records great adventurers throughout the generations have inspired others to break those records: to be faster, to go higher, to go further - feats of endurance that have inspired both children and adults around the world. True adventure makes us believe that the human spirit can achieve anything and everything, in his attempt to set a 'world first' record â" on the Virgin Global Row - Olly Hicks embodies this sense of adventure and belief. Simply because something has never been done doesn't mean it can't be.
At the age of 24, to be the first person to row solo around the globe will require not only extreme skills of strength and endurance but the mental ability and strength to overcome months at sea, alone without any other human contact, with only the sound of the rows hitting the water over and over again as company. I wish him all the best of luck with this momentous challenge and will be checking in every day on his progress on www.virginglobalrow.com
