Antarctica log 7 - Antarctica is a whole lot closer than you'd think

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, highest continent. It is the fifth largest of the seven continents. It is made up of 99.7% of ice and it has 90% of the world’s ice. Nothing sums up Antarctica better than the penguins. Today we visited an island that had 100,000 pairs of penguins. Their feathers grow out all around them protecting every inch of their body. There were also elephant seals burping and farting and leopard seals who feed off penguins and krill and crab seals that you …

Antarctica log 5 - icebergs and penguins

Thousands of icebergs just like this. So so beautiful. Look closely and you'll see hundreds of penguins on this one. Only worrying thing is this iceberg was once part of Larsen ice shelf that broke away from Antarctica. Antarctica log 3 - the world will never have another ice age

If you look at the history of the world we are normally in an ice age. Only 10,000 years ago you could walk from Scotland to North Africa on hundreds of feet of ice. When it melted sea levels rose by hundreds of feet. The good news is we now know how to heat up the world. We just release an excess of carbon into it. So any time we're heading to an ice age again that is what we can do to stop it. The bad news is that we're are in danger of releasing so much carbon that we could fry our beautiful e…

Antarctica log 2 - "No lie can live forever"

DOUBT from Reality on Vimeo. Al Gore quoted Martin Luther King when he was struggling for racial justice:"No lie can live forever."In the end Martin Luther King was proven right and by and large racial justice has come to America and the rest of the world. The same can be said about those climate sceptics that are funded by the coal and oil industry. "No lie can live forever."They use the same tactics that the tobacco industry once used. Using so called "experts" they cast doubt. They fund pho…

Antarctica log 1 - first 24 hours at sea

Heading from Ushuaia (which is often referred to as the end of the world) through the protected Beagles Channel into the notorious Drakes Passage where the seas can be ferocious. Important to make this journey a transfoming experience for all of us in our quest to help solve the problem of climate change. The first 24 hours at sea, the Gods have been kind to us. The captain says one of the most calm crossings of Drakes Passage ever. Could this be the lull before the storm?   A beautiful …

Why advertise for somebody else?

Was asked on Twitter by @ErledigtAgentur why would we advertise for somebody else? It's very rare that I use myself to advertise a non-Virgin company. In fact, it's quite rare to use myself to advertise a Virgin company. However, when we started Virgin Atlantic and only had one second hand 747, Amex asked if I would do an advert for them. I agreed on the condition that i had my 747 at a petrol station and used the Amex card to pay the 67,000 dollars it cost to fill up the plane. It really helped…

Argentina and the Falkland Islands

In beautiful Argentina on the way to Antarctica with Al Gore and a fascinating group of scientists and experts. It’s 30 years since military dictators in Argentina led by General Galtieri chose to invade the Falklands. Sadly both Britain and Argentina lost many young men in the conflict. The positive outcome of Argentina’s defeat was the overthrow of the dictators' despicable regime in Argentina that had rounded up and killed over 30,000 of their own people (The Disappeared). They …
