Extremely saddened to see the tragic hot air balloon accident in Egypt last week and our thoughts are with all of those who lost loved ones in the incident. It is such a rare occurrence and extraordinary bad luck.
As a veteran of hundreds of balloon flights around the world, I want to reiterate how safe this wonderful activity is. In the UK, around 50,000 people fly safely in commercial balloons every year. As well as challenges across the Pacific and Atlantic, many of my happiest balloon rides have been on short trips over the English countryside, as well as the Valley of the Kings.
Our Virgin Balloon Flights CEO and Chief Pilot, Kenneth Karlstrom, has written eloquently on ballooning safety in light of this week's events - you can read it over on their website. Hopefully this extremely sad incident won't deter people from enjoying ballooning.
