Asking for her hand in marriage

When my son Sam said to his fiancé Isabella's dad: "I would like to ask your daughter to marry me," he responded: "well of course you do!"

A friend of his dad had a not dissimilar experience when asking his partner's father for her hand in marriage. "Well, you've had the rest of her. You may as well have the hand!"

Anybody got any other good stories about asking parents for their daughter's hand in marriage?
