Are you here to save us? Or to save face?

Behind the scenes there are thousands of small organisations in Rio doing wonderful work. They are trying to do the best they can without a global Government framework, but what is dearly needed is the Government to come up with a clear action plan.
There are many mealy-mouthed words in the text that has come out of Rio. With lots of grand statements prefaced by words like 'seek to endeavour' making them as good as meaningless. From 20 years ago, almost everything has gone backwards. There has been a big loss in diversity, Governments lack commitment to carbon reduction, continued subsidies of fossil fuels and little to protect the oceans.
It's simply not adequate. It will not avert climate change. When the leaders arrive here at the end of this week they must take direct responsibility and overrule the text that their officials have put out. All of us at Rio+20 concerned for our environment call on our leaders to act boldly and responsibly.
As young Brittany Trilford said in Rio of our leaders "Are you here to save us? Or to save face?"

Tras bastidores hay miles de organizaciones en Río haciendo un trabajo maravilloso. Están intentando hacer lo mejor que pueden sin contar con un marco gubernamental global. Pero lo que realmente es necesario es que el gobierno proponga un claro plan de acción.
Hay muchas palabras vagas en el texto que ha surgido de Río, con muchas declaraciones grandilocuentes precedidas por palabras como “intentar procurar”, que las hace parecer tan buenas como insignificantes. De 20 años a esta parte, prácticamente todo ha salido al revés. Ha habido una gran pérdida en materia de diversidad, los gobiernos han fallado en su compromiso de reducir las emisiones de carbono, continúan los subsidios a los combustibles fósiles y se ha hecho poco por proteger los océanos.
Simplemente no es adecuado. No impedirá el cambio climático. Cuando los líderes lleguen aquí a fines de esta semana, deberán asumir de forma directa su responsabilidad e invalidar el texto que sus funcionarios han dado a conocer. Todos los que estamos aquí en Río+20 preocupados por nuestro medio ambiente, apelamos a nuestros líderes a actuar valiente y responsablemente.
Como la joven Brittany Trilford les dijo a nuestros líderes en Río: “¿Están aquí para salvarnos o para salvar las apariencias?”
