Steve Jobs' design lesson

Enjoyed lunch with Walter Isaacson recently, a brilliant writer and in particular a talented biographer. His books on Albert Einstein and Henry Kissinger are well worth tracking down, as well as his recent Steve Jobs biography. He told a lot of great anecdotes about Steve, who I have often said is the fellow entrepreneur I most admire. One story that stood out though was how his first piece of advice from his father.Having already marked off a section of his garage work bench for Steve - saying &…

You can teach an old bird new tricks

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Well, you certainly can teach an old macaw new tricks! We shared photos recently of our two lovebirds Che-Chen and Astro, who are inseperable on Necker and have set up their home in a flower pot outside our bedroom. They are such intelligent, inquisitive birds and have been quick to learn some party tricks. First up was showing off their wings. Next was the face-off, thousand-yard stare. Then - and this one is my favourite - using their…

Entrepreneurship is in safe hands

It was great to have the chance to host the annual Fast Track 100 event at my children’s home in Oxford last week. Being amongst so many successful and passionate business people really makes you realise how far the idea entrepreneurialism has come in the UK. As recently as 15 years ago people were unsure of what it all meant, now we have no shortage of young people growing up with aspirations of becoming an entrepreneur. It’s wonderful to see, for a country’s economy to thr…

What should I name my new book?

I'm currently writing a new book about leadership. One of the most important qualities any good leader needs to master is the art of listening. With that in mind, I wanted to hear from you all regarding the title of my new book. Here are a few ideas we've had about a title. Which do you prefer?                                 &n…

Marine conservation, business for good & astronauts

It’s been a productive last couple of days on Necker. We started off by hosting the Caribbean Challenge Initiative, with government and business leaders all coming together to agree on some positive, concrete changes to life in the Caribbean islands. Agreements were reached to protect 20% of the marine and coastal environment, to create a shark and ray sanctuary within two years and to move towards 100% clean energy by 2020. This was followed by an inspiring couple of days with Virgin Uni…

How Virgin Megastores still thrive

Virgin Megastores in the old Opera House, which is now thriving in Beirut. All the buildings around the Opera House were flattened to the ground by the war, and we decided to go in and support the economy, the people and the country. We had an incredible party on the roof of the building and the Megastores have never looked back since in Beirut. There are now six Virgin Megastores in Lebanon and while wandering around Beirut we found another store opening soon. We have 26 Megastores curren…

Time to overturn the 1971 drugs law

The UK government spends around £3 billion a year on its current drugs policy. We know from research, such as the recent report from the UK Drugs Policy Commission, that the war on drugs isn’t working.  Imagine if we spent this money on rehabilitation and prevention. As I’ve said before, we need to develop a new approach that treats drugs as a public health issue, rather than a criminal one.  We commend the government for commissioning a new study, which will send Jer…
