Mandela Day at Virgin Money
- Jul 20, 2011
In Norwich we used it as an opportunity to sort through our warehouse and clear out branded goods and prizes that we no longer use. In total, we donated around £1,000 worth of items, including Virgin London Marathon merchandise, running vests & jackets, money boxes, iPod speakers and even a Scalectrix set. A local school and fundraisers for the East Anglian Children's Hospice were the beneficiaries - and very pleased they were too!
This proved a real 'win win' for us, we got some much needed extra space and the good causes got some great items to sell.
In our Edinburgh office, the team have introduced an area for staff to donate unwanted items to Oxfam to sell via their high street shops, online store and at festivals throughout the UK. What's particularly good about Oxfam is their 'Wastesaver scheme'. Any low grade textiles that cannot be sold in shops are sold in bulk to recycling reprocessing companies in the UK which use the textiles as mattress fillers, carpet underlay and upholstery reducing the amount of textiles to landfill.
In the Yeovil Office, due to the small size of it and the priorities of the banking duties have to take precedence, they spread their activities over several days. These consisted of dog walking, vegetable gardening and a sponsored bicycle ride, they brought in clothes to donate to their chosen local charity, St Margaret's Hospice and are organising a tea party too!
In our London office, they held a 'Cake Off'. The social committee baked cakes and brought them in to join others that staff had brought along. These were then sold around the office for 67 mins.
In total they made around £150 for Nelson Mandela's Children's Fund
Good work Virgin Money!
