Virgin Wines Supports Community in South Africa
- Feb 19, 2010
Virgin Wines are proud to announce, today, our participation in a project to provide funding for a new computer centre and library at a primary school in South Africa.
The Fairhills Project was set up in 2005, as a joint venture between Du Toitskloof Wine Cellar and the wine exporter, Origin Wine, in the Breedekloof region of South Africa. We are the exclusive retailer of a range of wines, named Usizo, produced by the winery. The wines have been available on our website since August 2009 and funds from each case are being invested in the project.
Virgin Wines have already contributed around R60,000 to the project, which has gone some way to fund the build of the computer centre and library at Lorraine Primary School in Rawsonville. On a recent visit to South Africa to review the progress of the project, our wine buyer, Andrew Baker, was shown the day care centres that the project has already provided for the local community. However, at the same time, he also learnt of the urgent need to equip the new building with a roof in time for the winter (our summer).
Wanting to see the build through to completion, Virgin Wines have made it our aim to raise a large injection of funds as quickly as possible and so, from Tuesday 23rd February, we're inviting you to buy a case of Usizo wines to support the growers, their families and their communities.
Commenting on the project during Andrew Baker's visit, Annelie Abrahams, Headmistress at Lorraine Primary School said: "We urgently need more space...which is why we are so happy to get this computer room and library from our team at Virgin Wines." She continued: "It's not just for the children; it's for the parents too! Many of them can't read or write – you try setting the kids homework when their parents can't grasp what they're supposed to be doing...this is why I'm so happy. This isn't just for the children, it's for everyone here. Thank you all so much!"
Jay Wright, our Managing Director said: "We are extremely grateful to those customers who've already helped get this computer centre and library project off the ground and we are hoping that by promoting this special case offer it will give the project the final push that it needs to enable the roof to go on before winter." He added: "The Usizo range of wines is produced at one of the most renowned wineries in South Africa and we want to encourage as many customers as possible to give them a try, with the added knowledge that they are supporting a really worthwhile initiative. We are delighted to be participating in this project and hope that it develops into something really successful in the years to come."
