The Carbon War Room and the Aruban prime minister have partnered in an attempt to eliminate fossil fuel and become the world’s first truly sustainable nation.
The recent feature in the Creating Climate Wealth magazine by the Carbon War Room explains the Smart Island Economies Operation as their most ambitious yet.
Speaking during the Rio +20 talks, Aruba prime-minister Mike Eman said: “My vision is to create a social and economic resilience for Aruba that will improve the health, happiness and wellbeing of its citizens. I believe today’s partnership will propel Aruba to the next level in our progress toward achieving sustainability.”
Alongside the New America Foundation and War Room, The Aruban government will devise and implement a strategy that will make the country the world’s first sustainable energy economy.
There are six areas that will be targeted:
Transport
Energy efficiency
Water minimisation
Renewable energy
Tourism
Agriculture
100 % of Aruba’s water is currently desalinated and the country is aiming for 100% renewable energy generation. Currently, 20% of Aruba’s energy is produced from renewable sources.
