Introducing Mission Aquarius

Today will see a unique Google+ Hangout take place, with underwater explorer and Ocean Elder Sylvia Earle speaking from 60 feet below sea level in an 80-ton cylindrical steel chamber.

The Ocean Elders, who include Richard Branson in their ranks, will be heading to the underwater laboratory Aquarius Reef Base - eight miles from the Florida coastline – for a final Aquarius mission.

Earle will be joined by Mark Patterson, Professor of Marine Science at College of William & Mary, as they investigate the coral reef. The pair will also be accompanied by aquanaut DJ Roller, with the award-winning filmmaker capturing 3D images of the mission.

To find out more about what they hope to achieve, tune in today at 1:00pm ET (5:00pm UTC) on the National Geographic Google+ page.
