Richard Branson is to take part in the first ever live, global hangout debate as part of the Google+ Debate Series on Youtube from IQ.

The War on Drugs : Versus Debate will take place on March 13th at 7pm, with experts, presidents, entrepreneurs and celebrities coming together to get to grips with this age defining issue.

The Virgin Group founder will be joined by the likes of Russell Brand, Emily Maitlis, Mischa Glenny, Julian Assange and President Cardoso. The debate will be able to be viewed for free on Youtube.

Branson has been outspoken in recent months, on what he sees as the failure of the war on drugs: We must stop criminalising drug users. Health and treatment should be offered to drug users not prison. Bad drugs policies affect literally hundreds of thousands of individuals and communities across the world. We need to provide medical help to those that have problematic use not criminal retribution.

He will face strong opposition from figures such as former Met Police Commissioner, Lord Ian Blair, who recently declared: a world in which drugs were legally available might be an unknowable, unreversable potential nightmare, and Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens who believes there is no war on drugs, its time to start fighting it.
