Congratulations are in order for Virgin Wines, who were named the Innovator of the Year last night at the International Wine Challenge Merchant of the Year Awards.

Virgin Wines has had a focus on innovation in the last few years, with their Virtual Winery Project. The Winery was launched last August, bringing together wine lovers online, helping them create a brand new red wine in conjunction with the Finca Manzanos winery based in Rioja, Spain.

These virtual winemakers all played a part in the decisions which shaped the future of the new red wine. The project culminated in May when the wine, named Doncella Roja (meaning red maiden) was completed.

Jay Wright, managing director at Virgin Wines comments: "We are constantly striving for new ideas and technologies to set us apart from our competitors and this award is a true reflection of all the hard work and effort put in by the team to do just that. Our Virtual Winery is one of several recent innovations and came about from our desire to make wine as fun and exciting as possible, while truly engaging customers by involving them at every step of the winemaking process."
