She Makes War

The music industry is a fickle confusing one that seems to rotate constantly as it looks to educate us in to what music we should listen to because its “trendy” and “cool”. From August – December, the general public get to see gallons of tears flow across multiple stage floors as X Factor fever grips the land. However amazing somebody might be, once they are sucked in to the black hole of Simon Cowell’s ever expanding music empire, they're lost forever.

For the previous months of the year before the TV spectacle starts, it’s always interesting to see who’s been popular and cruising the festival circuit. The Chinese have 2010 down as the year of the tiger and in musical terms, 2010 has been all about the ladies as they’ve created sounds that people love. All sorts of styles have been covered with Lady Gaga providing slightly addictive but freaky pop, Lily Allen is still floating around despite flirting with the idea of quitting music. Paloma Faith, Kate Nash, La Roux, Florence and the Machine and Ellie Goulding have also shown they can cut it.

With anything, once a successful formula is found, it can be easy for cheap imitation copies to emerge.  Record labels in particular often open the floodgates, causing market saturation. Thankfully, this hasn’t happened and the quality is ruling over the one off novelties. At present, there is no better time for excellence to shine through and She Makes War ticks all the boxes in terms of song writing, dedication and creativity.

Don’t roll your eyes when that we tell you that She Makes War, aka Laura Kidd comes from London. Yes, it may sometimes appear that you have to be from the big smoke to forge a musical career, but there have been no famous links forged in order to climb the musical ladder. In fact, you may have already seen She Makes War and not have realised it. Fans of Tricky will have seen her playing the bass and singing when playing with The Young Punx. Basically, She Makes War is a jack of all trades, being able to control all aspects of the finished product.

As independent artists go, then a neon coloured arrow would be permanently attached to She Makes Wars back. This process has been ongoing since 2009, where the EP 'Three…Two….One' was recorded entirely at home. So what you may think, plenty of people can do that based on the cost and availability of studio standard equipment. But we’re not looking at that; it’s all about the time and effort going in to the debut She Makes War album, 'Disarm'. The end product is more than just a faceless bundle of MP3 data or CD backed with badly photocopied sleeve notes.

With four bundles to pick from, you’re getting more than just a CD. Holding everything together is a lovingly crafted case that binds the other goodies contained. These include a DVD full of music videos and a code to a live EP download. From handmade postcards, personalised lyric bookelets, and badges this really adds a lot of charm to the release. However, She Makes War goes one step further by allowing you to gain access to an exclusive performance as part of a package you can buy. Don’t think it’ll be you and a host of other people in a small dank room. Oh no, this will be a private affair via the wonders of modern technology.

Locked away in the albums thirteen tracks are sounds that overlap and crash together to form melodies that instantly stick in the mind, they could soundtrack multiple situations that life throws up. From small burst of frustration, happiness and confusion. Interpretation plays a major part here, especially when it comes to the lyrics. There isn’t a song which contains a line like “my ex boyfriend is a total dick and I hate him,” to make you feel a bit of sorrow and empathy. Put more subtly, a lyric in from opening track 'Scared To Capsize' gets thoughts racing when she calmly sings “with three words you lied”. Are they the obvious ones that a person in love wants to hear? Or is it something innocent instead?

Music clearly has a place in the heart of She Makes War and looking at all the hard work she has put in towards touring and music videos, no-one can deny that. Effort has been done to make herself stand out from the crowd and do more than place a couple of low quality MP3’s on MySpace and wait for attention to generate.  All the effort has been done and Disarm is a record that deserves to be heard by everyone.
